A calculator for what a drive actually costs, in your own units and currency.
Why does it ask me to type the distance instead of using a map?
The calculator works from numbers you type, so it needs no map and stays free. Drives is the optional part that records a route: it uses your phone’s location only after you start a drive or turn on automatic detection, and the route stays on your phone.
My MPG figure gives a different answer than I expected.
Check whether you want MPG (US) or MPG (UK). A UK gallon is 4.55 litres and a US gallon is 3.79, so the same MPG number means roughly 20% different fuel use. Most apps only offer the US version; this one has both.
Can I enter numbers with a comma instead of a full stop?
Yes. Commas, full stops, and Arabic and Persian numerals all work.
Where are my saved vehicles stored?
Only on your device. They are never uploaded anywhere, which also means they do not transfer to a new phone. The same goes for saved trips.
Where do the car fuel-economy figures come from?
The built-in car list uses the US EPA's published combined fuel-economy ratings (fueleconomy.gov), bundled inside the app. Your own mileage will differ, so you can always type your own figure instead.
Does it work without internet?
Yes, entirely. The app never connects to the internet.
Does Fuel Cost track where I go?
Only if you use Drives, and only on your phone. A drive is recorded when you start one or when you turn on automatic detection. Routes are never uploaded. You can turn detection off, and delete one drive or all of them, in Drive settings.
Why does automatic detection ask for location “Always”?
A drive starts while the app is closed, so the phone must let Fuel Cost see your location in the background. Without Always, you can still start drives by hand. Your phone shows a notification while detection is on.
