Common questions

The same colours give a different answer on 4-band and 5-band. Which is right?
Both — it depends on the part in your hand. A 4-band resistor has two significant digits and a 5-band has three, so yellow-violet-red is 4.7 kΩ on a 4-band part and 47 Ω on a 5-band one. Count the bands on the component before reading, and set the same count in the app.

Why does it read "10R" two different ways?
Because real parts are marked both ways. In R notation the letter stands in for the decimal point, so 10R is 10 Ω. In the EIA-96 scheme used on 1% surface-mount parts, 10 indexes the table and R is a ×0.01 multiplier, making it 1.24 Ω. The app shows the common reading and names the other rather than guessing, because fitting a resistor eighty times too small is not a small mistake.

Can I type 4k7 instead of 4.7k?
Yes. 4k7, 4.7k, 4700, 470R and R47 all work, as do commas as decimal marks and Arabic and Persian numerals.

It says my value has no band pattern. Is that a bug?
No. The colour code carries a fixed number of significant figures, so some values simply cannot be printed on a resistor — 4.75 kΩ has no 4-band form. Switch to 5 bands, or use the nearest value the app offers.

Does it work without internet?
Yes, entirely. The app never connects to the internet and stores nothing about you.
